Odds and Ends

First ... I had written a blog post to share the workflow I created for a digital notebook of sorts. Seems that I might've wasted all that time. I think I found a solution on the Mac App Store. Will test it out and get back to you.

Second ... I can't wait for the HBO mini-series, A Game of Thrones, to air. It is based on George RR Martin's series A Song of Ice and Fire. As we don't have an HBO subscription, I'm tempted to get one just to watch the series. New trailers for the series can be found here and here. This link will take you to the Making Of site, if you're interested.

Third ... George himself had an update -- the next book in the series will be out next year! Finally. Might have to clear out the rest of the year just to finish the tome. Kidding, I'll keep writing. Really. ;-)

Fourth ... A writer friend has convinced me to participate in #fridayflash. She sent me a link that explains the meme. Not sure if I can crank something out by tomorrow, but definitely next week. Wish me luck!

Happy words!

Reacquainted

Coming back to my story after a break of a few months, I realize I'd forgotten some little details. Yikes. Fortunately, it was names of things like a castle, an estate, and a few minor characters. But still, yikes.

At least I didn't put everything out of mind, it's not like I could forget Akeva and Brian after I searched long and hard for their names or how long I've worked with them before, although they are a bit more snarky than I recall. Is it me or them? Not sure that it matters, but should I try to hear/write them as I remember them, or as they sound now? I'll have to think about that.

This revision process also highlights lots of "missed opportunities," you know those things that don't look so good after some time and distance. The upside/downside ... I have lots of those to capitalize. The Emily Contest comments have been extremely helpful to understand what I can do to improve the story. I'm finally getting the "Show, Don't Tell" mantra that writers see and hear everywhere.

In all, this whole process is a good learning experience, and reiterates to me that I should find some critique partners soon.

It's also nice to get reacquainted with my story again. Sort of like when you get back in contact with old friends from high school and college. If only it were as easy as those sorts of reunions. Speaking of which, time to get back to my keyboard, I still have some catching up to do.

Back in the saddle again.

Last week's celebrating is finished. The family grilled me a wonderful dinner, and they baked a 7Up bundt cake. I've downloaded my  music and ordered a new hard drive.

Now I'm in the throes of line-editing, revising, and typing a 400 page beast of a mostly handwritten manuscript. I've arranged my notes on what to watch out for, printed out the Emily Contest judges' comments, and rearranged my workspace so I can have everything at hand.

And so, I'm back in the saddle again.

I'm Celebrating.

Finally. A big weight off my shoulders.

I've completed the 1st draft of my NaNoWriMo2010 story, roughly 80k words. And, no I'm not  going to think how many more drafts it will go through, it is very rough in places. Really. I'm stopping this instant. Instead, I'm focusing on the fact that I got it all down in my trusty Scrivener. Like I said, finally.

A celebratory dessert is in order, maybe a hot apple pie, a yummy 7Up bundt cake, or even an untried-by-me recipe to test. Something to feed me and my Muse.

Then, I'll continue celebrating by purchasing new music. I'm thinking maybe How To Train Your Dragon soundtrack, Philharmonics by Agnes Obel, or maybe something completely different. My wishlists in Amazon and iTunes are quite long and diverse. I'm sure the new tracks, whatever they are, will  become part of a writing playlist in the future. More Muse gifts.

And another thing I'm going to do to celebrate? Go back to one of my Late List items and complete my How To Revise Your Novel novel.

Oh, and buy a new external backup drive. My old one crashed just yesterday.

So, time to go celebrate. Guess which one I'm starting with first. Yep, I'm opening the course outline, weekly lesson, and the old manuscript. This weekend will feature the dessert, and the hard drive and music will have to wait until next month's budget.

In the meantime, I'll be thinking of ways to celebrate completing the next milestone. Bribery, it works. Hopefully, the Muse agrees.
